2019: I'm under pressure to run for president

The National Conscience Party (NCP) National Chairman, Yunusa Tanko, has said he is under pressure to contest the office of president in the 2019 general elections.

Tanko, a former Chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) said the NCP would issue free expression of interest and nomination forms to its members willing to contest the presidential, governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly seats in 2019.

He told our correspondent in an interview in Abuja, shortly after a group of youths paid him a visit that he would consider the possibility of contesting the office of president, adding that he would formally declare his intention to run after wide consultations with critical stakeholders.

Yunusa also advised the youths to take advantage of the NCP policy of issuing free nomination forms to aspirants, to contest various offices in 2019.

"I am considering to run for the office of president in 2019, after general consultations with party stakeholders. It is the party that gives members the ticket to run. So I must consult widely before declaring my intention. For now, I am under pressure to contest.

"The NCP nomination forms are free, we don't charge members for that. But we build the party from the dues and donations paid by members. Donating for the party, however, does not give any of our members the yardstick to become a god-father or to hijack the party.

"It is better for the youths to struggle hard and be in governance than getting peanuts from politicians. It is good for Nigeria to have a new paradigm shift. We are in the digital age and we must behave digital.

"The polity is so intense that some Nigerians are no longer interested in the PDP or the APC. And no party in Nigeria today will give you its platform free to contest apart from the NCP. So we are going to field a presidential candidate in 2019. In 2015, we fielded Dr. Martins Onovo from the south-east," he said.

He however elucidated that the party does not operate based on zoning principles.
