Samsung: Galaxy buds as direct rival to Apple Airpods

A leaked photo reveals what Samsung's AirPods rival might look like

The future of Samsung gadgets may have just been revealed

AN EARLY image of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone has turned up online – alongside another new gadget.

The leaked image also shows "Galaxy Buds", which are believed to be a direct rival to the Apple AirPods. The AirPods were launched by Apple back in 2016, and have quickly become one of the most popular iPhone accessories.

The small wireless earbuds connect to the smartphone over Bluetooth, allowing for music playback, hands-free calling, and even control over the Siri digital assistant.

When out of use, they can be tucked back inside a small battery case that recharges the buds.

And it seems Samsung is borrowing the idea, at least according to an alleged marketing photo leaked by tech blog WinFuture.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S10 at a special launch event on February 20

Rumours of a pair of "Samsung Galaxy Buds" have been swirling for months, but this leaked photo is as close to confirmation as we've got.

The small white earbuds look extremely similar to the AirPods, but are missing the long stem featured on Apple's buds.

The case is also longer and more ovular, which sets them apart in terms of design.

On the bottom of the case, it's possible to make out a faint green light.

It's likely that this light will be used to show the amount of charge in the Galaxy Buds.

The WinFuture report suggests that the Galaxy Buds will retail at €149, which translate to about £130.

By comparison, a pair of Apple AirPods would set you back £159 today.

It's likely Samsung will avoid a direct currency conversion, and more closely match the AirPods pricing – with a £139 or £149 price tag.

The 'Galaxy Buds' look very similar to the Apple AirPods – although they could cost £10 to £30 less

This leaked photo also gives us a glimpse of the Samsung Galaxy S10, which has already been heavily leaked.

The phone is expected to sport a triple-camera set-up on the back, as well as featuring a large all-screen design on the front.

Of course, Samsung hasn't actually officially confirmed any plans for a Galaxy S10 or Galaxy Buds.

However, Samsung is hosting a major press event on February 20 – just before Barcelona's annual MWC 2019 tech show – where it's likely we'll see the Galaxy S10 unveiled.

It's also possible that the long-awaited Samsung folding phone will get a showing at the event too.

Until then, take all leaks and rumours with a pinch of salt.
