Akon is hoping to create a new futuristic city in the West African country, described as a 'real life Wakanda'

GRAMMY-nominated singer Akon is planning to build a futuristic city in Senegal - described as a "real life Wakanda" - and base its economy around a new virtual currency named after himself.

The 45-year-old hitmaker, who was born in Missouri but is of Senegalese descent and spent much of his childhood there, claimed it could be “the saviour of Africa”.

Akon unveiled plans to build a futuristic city in Senegal and base its economy around a new digital currency named after himself

Akon hopes his new cryptocurrency Akoin will be at the centre of a "100 per cent crypto-based city" called Akon Crypto City – close to the Senegalese capital of Dakar.

Like bitcoin, the akoin digital currency would function outside the realm of governments and traditional financial institutions, meaning it will "bring the power back to the people".

Speaking at a panel during Cannes Lions 2018, the Senegal-raised artist said: “I think that blockchain and crypto could be the saviour for Africa in many ways."

He said the technology "brings the power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system".

The 45-year-old said hed already been gifted 2,000 square acres of land for his planned city in Senegal

Akon insisted Akoin would "allow the people to utilise it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down".

According to the Akoin website Crypto City will be created on 2,000 acres of land granted by Senegal president Macky Sall.

It says: “[The city is] within five minutes of the new international airport, close to the coast and a short drive from Dakar, the capital city of Senegal (Akon’s ancestral homeland).

“This mixed use, master-planned city, contains everything from residential to retail, parks, stadium, light manufacturing, universities, and schools.

“Akon Crypto City has opportunities for brands, businesses and high-profile individuals to create amazing, inclusive experiences in a futuristic environment and welcomes anyone looking to step into the future.”

The Smack That singer admitted he is only the visionary for the project and is happy to "let the geeks figure it out" when it comes to making it a reality.

He also discussed his plans to take on President Donald Trump and potentially Kanye West in the 2020 US presidential election.

When asked about a potential debate with Trump, Akon said: “It’s gonna be entertaining, it’s gonna be something worth watching.

“I’m going to go after Trump and Kanye will get offended because he likes Trump and he’s going to go after me.

“Then I’m going to go after Kanye and then Trump’s going to get offended because he likes Kanye and he’s going to go after me.

“And the debate stage will be set where it’s all about me. It’s perfect, a masterplan.”
